Celebrate Evolution Sunday
Now that Super Bowl XLII is safely behind us, we can look forward to Evolution Sunday 2008. According to a report in The Scientist, 467 congregations planned their church services around Evolution Sunday in 2006, and 618 participated in 2007. This year's Evolution Sunday will take place February 10.
The Rev. Nancy Rockwell, senior pastor of the Exeter (N.H.) Congregational Church, delivered a sermon on Evolution Sunday 2007 regarding the theory of natural selection: "[Darwin] understood evolution as endless imaginative scribbling, doodling, tinkering." For his part, Miles Silman, a biology professor at Wake Forest, decided to help fellow Baptists understand evolution: "I explain why ["intelligent design" is] crummy science . . . and how it's been refuted."
God bless clerics like Reverend Rockwell and academics like Professor Silman.
